'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' spoilers: Kurt Russell playing Star-Lord's father?

Guardians of the Galaxy - Star-Lord Marvel Studios

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is nearing the end of production. Actor Dave Bautista, who plays the warrior known as Drax, revealed via Facebook that filming in Atlanta was almost complete. With production nearing its end, spoilers and rumors continue to grow and Movie News Guide reports on whom Kurt Russell might be portraying.

Many fans speculate that Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is the son of Adam Warlock. Adam Warlock was featured in the first movie but he appeared in his cocoon form and many believe that he will finally break out in the sequel, revealing himself to be Star-Lord's alien father. However, Movie News Guide speculates that Russell might not be playing Warlock at all.

Instead, the report points out that Russell could be playing a character known as Starhawk. In the comic books, Starhawk is half-human and half-alien, which makes his backstory somewhat similar to Peter Quill. Starhawk is also from an ancient alien race and this will coincide with the information shared at the end of the first movie.

Further pushing forward with this rumor is the fact that actress Elizabeth Debicki has been cast as the main villain known as Ayesha. Ayesha is also known as Her, Kismet and Paragon. The crucial tidbit is that Ayesha, as her persona Kismet, is the mother of Starhawk. If she is indeed playing Ayesha and Russell is playing Starhawk then the sequel will focus a lot on the family and lineage of Peter Quill and how they all connect to the main MCU villain, Thanos (Josh Brolin).

It is important to note that neither director James Gunn nor Russell has commented on the rumors and as such the information regarding Russell's character should still be taken as pure speculation.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be released in theaters on May 5, 2017.
