'GTA 5' news: Fan-made multiplayer leads to ban on modders

Some "Grand Theft Auto 5" players have been banned for a mod they made for the game.

The mod made by the players is essentially another multiplayer mode for "Grand Theft Auto 5." The mod project, known as FiveM, enabled "Grand Theft Auto 5" players with specific customizations that are not available in Rockstar's own online offering for the game. FiveM also gave players the ability to use map mods for the game as well as different servers whenever they chose to do so.

FiveM was meant to act as a counterpart to Rockstar's very own online own mode, according to Ubergizmo.

The source of contention in this issue is whether or not FiveM's creators truly did break the rules that were set by Rockstar Games.

The group of modders behind FiveM said they took special care so as to not use "Grand Theft Auto Online" itself for their creation so as to avoid being banned, but it at appears as though their efforts were not able to yield the results they wanted.

According to one FiveM user named Ash Rogers, the modders in question did indeed comply with the rules Rockstar Games set forth in terms of usable mods within the community. Rogers contends that even though those users followed the rules, Rockstar Games still saw it fit to hit them with bans.

According to Eurogamer, Rockstar's golden rule when it comes to mods basically comes down to players who will only be using single player mods will be allowed to continue doing so, but anyone who messes around with "Grand Theft Auto Online" will be putting their accounts at risk.

According to Rockstar, they have set this rule in place mainly because they want to avoid instances wherein players using mods can utilize them to gain unfair advantages over others.

Rockstar Games has yet to officially release a statement on the situation.
