Facebook to have an in-app search engine?

Facebook seems to be integrating a search engine in its mobile app.

In a report from tech industry observer Tech Crunch, some iOS users have noted that a minute query box has popped up in their Facebook app. Instead of opening another tab to search via Google or another search engine, users can instead explore for their search terms right inside the Facebook app.

When reached by Tech Crunch to expound on the new feature, Facebook said that this new option is only on a trial basis.

Facebook confirmed, "We're piloting a new way to add a link that's been shared on Facebook to your posts and comments."

The search box is found as an "add a link" option next to the social interface. Aside from the add photos, locations, and feelings, iOS users that brows the in-app Facebook can now also enter a search term right on the feeds section. When entered, Facebook will suggest related links like news and clippings to the post.

The results for any keyword are promised to be massive. The search engine inside Facebook is unique in itself, too, as aside from the search results that can be found in Google and other search engines, the posts to be reflected by in-app queries will also be cross-indexed with over a trillion related posts and shares on Facebook itself.

The trial dovetails with Facebook's plans to expand the app to become more than a social networking site, and to develop the app as a central hub for people, network, and content.

Reportedly, Facebook is also looking to integrate content from online publishers right on the newsfeed. If the native tab, much like the scrolling notifications and tickers seen on news videos, would push through, Facebook is indeed a step closer to making its expansion come true.
