CBS' "Extant's" future is no more as it was already confirmed that the sci-fi drama series has been cancelled.
As previously reported, the show's second season ended with a major cliffhanger and it was speculated that the series may be picked up for another season, but it appears that it won't make it, as decided by CBS along with "Extant" star Halle Berry.
"CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the 'Extant' story after last season's exciting and fitting conclusion," CBS President Glenn Geller said, according to an Oct. 9 report from Variety.
The decision was mutual for everyone involved in the series, and Geller even praised Berry for being committed to the show.
He added that he's looking forward to working with the actress in the future.
"Extant's" first season did not really do well and it gained an average rating of 1.1 among 18-49-year-old audiences and garnered a total of 6.15 million viewers.
Season 2, which wrapped up last month, saw several changes including having Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a replacement for the male lead (JD Richter) and it didn't help attract attention.
The second season had an average rating of 0.7 in the aforementioned demographic and only garnered 4.70 million viewers, according to TV Series Finale.
It appears that series' A-list casting and the fact that it was executive produced by Steven Spielberg didn't do much help for the survival of the series.
Meanwhile, Berry may have said goodbye to the show, but it's not the end of the CBS–Berry collaboration.
The network also announced that it is creating a new drama series titled "Legalese" starring Berry, who will play the role of a bi-racial lawyer and will work with a white attorney to solve a case in New Orleans.
"Legalese" will be written by "The Good Wife's" Steven Lichtman and executive produced by Berry along with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
