Syfy's supernatural action series "Dominion" premieres July 9, and it promises to be "not only darker, but much more intense," TV Fanatic reports.

"Dominion" is set in a post-apocalyptic future, 25 years after an army of lower angels conquered Earth and waged war against mankind. It follows the "Chosen One," Alex Lannen (Christopher Egan), who must fight to save Vega from annihilation. The angels, led by Gabriel (Carl Beukes), had almost decimated the human race until the archangel Michael (Tom Wisdom) turned against his own kind and helped build fortified cities to protect those who survived.

According to its official synopsis, the freshman episode, titled "Heirs of Salvation," will focus on the continuation of the Gabriel and Michael saga. While war rages in the handful of cities left on earth, Michael will discover a mysterious town called Mallory, which remains untouched by mankind's struggle with the angels.

Meanwhile, Alex will travel to the legendary city of Delphi, a human outpost with a dark secret, hoping to secure a military alliance with its leader. Claire Riesen (Roxanne McKee) will find herself pitted with David Whele (Anthony Head) and his newfound rebel allies in the human civil war brewing in Vega.

The season 1 finale left off with Alex making his way back to Gabriel while William Whele (Luke Allen Gale) was seen wandering in the dessert. Fans also discovered that Claire was pregnant with Alex's child.

Blastr says that though it took a while to "ramp up," the first season grew into "a steamy political drama with some nice action and religious undertones." According to the website, "Dominion's" freshman year did "a solid job of setting up the world and the stakes."

"Judging by the footage from Season 2, it seems we'll finally be getting some payoff from all that setup. Things are building to all-out war, and this guilty pleasure looks like it'll be even more delicious for the second go-round," the review reads.

"Heirs of Salvation" will be directed by Deran Sarafian and written by Katie Gruel, Jerry Shandy and Vaun Wilmott. It will premiere at 10 p.m. Thursday on Syfy.
