A much anticipated quarterback matchup between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will not be witnessed this Sunday, as the Denver Broncos start Brock Osweiler when they take on the unbeaten defending champions New England Patriots.

In the Broncos' 17–15 victory over the Chicago Bears last Sunday, Osweiler already took over the starting duties at the quarterback position for Manning who is nursing a foot injury.

ESPN reported that Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak announced last Monday that Osweiler will start against New England, and also said that Manning is in Charlotte to see orthopedic foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.

Against the Bears, Osweiler had an impressive performance in his first career start, completing 20 of 27 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, although he was sacked five times.

The second round pick by the Broncos in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) Draft has played in a total of two games this 2015 season, including his start versus the Bears.

In two games, Osweiler had 34 completions for 396 yards and three touchdowns, only throwing one interception.

Kubiak was impressed with his start against the Bears and said, according to ESPN, "It was encouraging for a first start in this league. He's got to feel good about the first step."

But starting Osweiler for the rest of the 2015 season is unlikely as ESPN's Chris Mortensen said a league source revealed that Kubiak plans to return the role to Manning once he recovers from the injury.

The Broncos are currently the leaders in the American Football Conference (AFC) West with an 8–2 record. Following them are the Kansas City Chiefs (5–5), Oakland Raiders (4–6), and the San Diego Chargers (2–8).

A victory for Denver this Sunday will be huge as it will make them the first team to beat the undefeated Patriots and will also solidify their hold of the top spot in the division.
