The Dallas Cowboys continue to explore options for cornerback Brian Carr's contract and team vice president Stephen Jones said they are open to the possibility of giving him an extension deal.
There were rumors early in the offseason that the Cowboys are looking to release Carr after June 1 to save some cap space according to NFLtraderumors.com.
But since that date has passed, it seems like Carr will be staying in Dallas for a few more seasons.
The 29-year-old football player joined the Cowboys as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012 signing a five-year, $50.1 million deal with a guaranteed $25.5 million.
Carr is set to earn $8 million for the 2015 season and count $12.717 million against the salary cap, ESPN reported.
He will be getting $9.1 million in 2016 and is signed through 2017, although it is a voidable year for salary cap purposes according to NFLtraderumors.com.
ESPN suggested that the Cowboys can give him an extension to lower his cap number for the next few seasons but not jeopardizing the original amount he is set to make through his base salary.
"We're always visiting there. Ben Dogra represents him and I have a good relationship with Ben, so we'll continue to see if there's something that might work so that Brandon can be here for the next two, three, four years — get something that's good for both sides. But if it doesn't, we're all ready to go," Jones said regarding Carr's contract situation according to ESPN.
Lowering the cap number for Carr might be the most ideal step the Cowboys may do about his contract after he underperformed last season, not even tallying one interception despite playing 16 regular season games and two playoff games.
According to the Star-Telegram, Jones also said that regarding extensions, they are looking at certain players since they already have flexibility with their cap space following the signing of wide receiver Dez Bryant.
