It was an anticipated comeback that ended soon, as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is out for the 2015 National Football League (NFL) season after reinjuring his collarbone in their 33–14 Thanksgiving loss to the Carolina Panthers last Thursday.
According to ESPN, a computed tomography (CT) scan last Friday showed that Romo suffered a hairline fracture to his left collarbone, which he had also fractured in Week 2 of the regular season and kept him out for seven games.
Despite the injury, the report added that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said a surgery is not needed and Romo will be ready to join the team when they begin offseason activities next March.
Romo was hit by Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis in the defeat which led to the collarbone injury.
After missing seven games for the Cowboys, which all ended up as losses, the 35-year-old passer returned in Week 11 against the Miami Dolphins and helped his team snap the losing skid.
The game against the Panthers was only the second in his return, which later abruptly ended his season.
In a total of only four games played this season, a career-low, Romo had 83 completions for 884 yards and five touchdowns, also throwing seven interceptions.
Now that Romo is out, the Cowboys will likely return to another veteran quarterback Matt Cassel as the starter in their remaining regular season schedule.
Cassel replaced Brandon Weeden who was the first quarterback Dallas had when Romo was injured in Week 2.
Unfortunately, both quarterbacks were unable to lead the Cowboys to a win in Romo's absence, with Weeden even getting waived later in the season.
Cassel has played five games for the Cowboys this season, which included four starts, and has 87 completions for 902 yards with five touchdowns, also having five interceptions.
The Cowboys will again face life without Romo when they play this Monday and take on the Washington Redskins.
