The deadline nears for the Dallas Cowboys and wide receiver Dez Bryant, but a deal has yet to be reached, and according to a report by Mike Florio of NBC Sports, nothing is going down.
Florio cited an earlier report saying the Cowboys would have an announcement on July 6 regarding Bryant's deal, but that day already passed. Bryant has expressed his desire for a long-term deal. but the Cowboys have yet to make a move and come up with a new contract.
Florio's report quotes a league source aware of the situation as wondering where the positivity is coming from when it is likely that no deal will be reached soon. "I don't know where they get the optimism from. There's literally nothing going on," the source said.
Bryant, 26, threatened to sit out the Cowboys' regular season opener and continue to miss games if he was not offered the long-term deal that he wanted.
Both sides have until July 15 to come up with a new deal, but the wide receiver has options: he can either sign the franchise tag assigned to him by Dallas worth $12.823 million or choose to miss the season.
Bryant's representatives met with the Cowboys for the first time in months last June 26, but with nothing happening, it seems like there was no concrete discussion that took place regarding Bryant's deal.
The two-time Pro Bowler was with the team on their last day of minicamp but did not join practice. Bryant just watched from the sidelines and played catch with a team employee.
He also spoke to quarterback Tony Romo and a group of Cowboys organization members that include owner Jerry Jones, vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Jason Garrett. They are reportedly not worried about Bryant's current contract dispute with the team.
