The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing back one of their most energetic guys from last season after re-signing point guard Matthew Dellavedova to a new one-year pact that is worth around $1.2 million.
Previous reports said Dellavedova was closing to a multi-year deal with the Cavaliers, but instead he accepted the qualifying offer to stay.
According to ESPN, Dellavedova's new contract with Cleveland will make him an unrestricted free agent next offseason when the salary cap is set to increase as the league's new television deals kick in.
The 24-year-old guard also wanted to get his contract done before representing Australia in the FIBA Oceania Championship this August, ESPN added.
Dellavedova played in 67 games (13 starts) during the 2014-15 regular season averaging 4.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.
In the playoffs, Dellavedova played in 20 games (7 starts) and averaged 7.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per outing.
Behind the leadership of four-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) LeBron James, the Cavaliers reached the NBA Finals despite the setbacks they experienced last season, especially injuries during the playoffs.
In the first-round against the Boston Celtics, they lost forward Kevin Love who injured his shoulder; and in the Finals against the Golden State Warriors, the team lost All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving after he re-injured his knee in Game 1.
Irving was ruled out for the entire series and Dellavedova stepped up and emerged in his absence.
After dropping Game 1, Cleveland bounced back winning the next two games to take a 2-1 series lead with Dellavedova shining the brightest in their Game 3 victory.
The Aussie played huge in Game 3, scoring 20 points and also tallying five rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes of action.
After re-signing Dellavedova, Cleveland now has three point guards following the signing of veteran Mo Williams to a two-year contract earlier this month.
Irving will now have two backups in Williams and Dellavedova once he returns from injury.
