Carrie Underwood says success should be 'bigger' than fans' adulation and music sales

When it comes to her music, Christian country singer Carrie Underwood is a firm believer of taking risks and chances. This is exactly what she did with her gospel songs "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Something in the Water."

Underwood told Music Row Magazine that these two songs were successes because they made people feel something.

"If everybody had overthought everything, it would've ended up on a shelf somewhere and what a shame that would have been," she said. "You want radio to love it, fans to buy it, you want all those things to happen, but sometimes you have to say, 'This could be bigger than all of that, and you have to follow your heart."

Underwood listens to her instincts every time she creates new music. Most of the time, the "Smoke Break" songstress prefers to take things slowly because rushing might affect her work negatively.

"I wait just a little bit longer between albums because I want them to be the best they can possibly be and then go out on the road and live in one album space," she explained. "Then (I) take a minute, and remember what it's like to be a real person, staying in one place and being married and just kind of live a life for a second and then start writing again."

However, waiting patiently for her creative juices to flow properly does not mean that Underwood is being stagnant. "I always try to have something going on, even between albums," she shared. "I've been lucky enough to be part of other people's albums. It's always nice to have some music and be lucky enough for people to still be interested 10 years later."
