Brits are choosing to stay on home shores or within Europe for their holidays this year.

A poll of the top ten holiday destinations for 2013 found that all but one were in England or on the continent.

Top of the poll by HomeAway.co.uk was Malaga on the Costal del Sol. This was followed by London.

In addition to the capital, the West Country made it into the top 10 at number five, while the South East of England came in at number seven.

The Mediterranean continues to be a strong draw for British holidaymakers, with Majorca the third most popular destination, followed by Ibiza at number six, Torrevieja in Spain at number eight, Spain's Javea, Moraira and Denia area at number nine, and Albufeira in the Algarve coming in at tenth.

The only non-European destination to make it into the top 10 was Orlando, Florida.

HomeAway.co.uk says the uncertain economy and increase in flight costs could be factors in the holiday choices of Brits this year.

Erica Chang, Regional Director for HomeAway.co.uk, said: "Our most recent data has shown that in 2013 British holiday makers are generally choosing to take a break in the UK or Europe. Whilst we offer a wide range of accommodation globally, there is no denying that costs are on people's minds when it comes to booking a holiday and staying closer to home can bring down prices."

"This said, some people are of course still heading further afield, with Florida being a popular choice this year. By booking accommodation and flights well in advance, looking at tourist attraction discounts and travelling with family and friends there are ways to do this cost effectively and have a great time in fantastic properties in prime locations all over the world."
