British top contender Amir Khan believed that after his previous win over Chris Algieri, he would get to fight Floyd Mayweather; but again he was turned down and is now disappointed after the unbeaten American selected to face Andre Berto for possibly the final fight of his career.
Khan (31–3, 19 KOs) had said after his May victory against Algieri that he was close to a fight with Mayweather and a deal could get done in just a few weeks, but nothing happened.
Now, the 28-year-old's campaign was again stopped abruptly and he is dismayed with Mayweather's selection of Berto.
"I'm disappointed not to have got the fight for what is the third time after having been one of the front-runners," Khan said in a statement.
"I'm going to continue working hard to establish myself at the top of the welterweight division. Floyd Mayweather has fought the biggest names throughout his career and has earned the right to face whoever he chooses," he added.
Before Mayweather (48–0, 26KOs) chose Berto (31–3, 24KOs), Khan had criticized the way Mayweather was selecting his opponents and said he would also be undefeated if only he were cherry picking the boxers he faced.
Khan also said that since Mayweather is dodging a fight with him, Manny Pacquaio would be a more suitable opponent for him and will be a tougher one.
Despite everything, Khan expressed his support for Berto, who is his stablemate under trainer Virgil Hunter.
"I wish my stable-mate Andre Berto and trainer Virgil Hunter the very best of luck in the fight. I have seen how hard Andre trains and works and know that he is ready to give Floyd a very tough night," said Khan.
Mayweather is on the verge of tying Rocky Marciano's iconic 49–0 record with a potential win against Berto in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Sept. 12.
The majority believes this will be an easy fight for the retiring Mayweather but Berto said after getting picked that he will be knocking out the undefeated champion.
