The National Football League (NFL) may have seen the last of Baltimore Ravens veteran wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. after he suffered an Achilles tear in their 29–26 victory over the San Diego Chargers last Sunday.
According to ESPN, Smith suffered the injury after making a catch in the third quarter and was assisted off the field.
"What hurts the most is that I can't be out there with my guys. We had a great team win today, and that's really all that counts," Smith said after suffering the injury.
Despite getting injured, Smith still led the Ravens in receiving in Sunday's win having five receptions for 82 yards.
In seven games played this season, the 36-year-old has 46 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns.
This year has been tough on Smith as the Achilles tear was not the only injury that plagued him.
ESPN also mentioned in their report that the back injury (four microfractures) he suffered earlier last month which made him miss a game and his hurting knee limited him in last week's practice.
After this season, Smith still has one more year remaining in his contract; but last August, he announced that this season will be the last of his storied career.
In the Ravens' official website, it was reported that Smith has yet to make a decision, either he will play one more season in the NFL or retire.
"He didn't express any decisions to me one way or the other. Probably it's too emotional of a time right now to make any decision like that. He'll make those decisions in due time, I'm sure," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh stated, according to the report.
Harbaugh also said Smith will undergo surgery next week, with the report adding that he will be "immobilized" for six weeks before he can go through rehabilitation.
The loss of Smith is a tough hit on the Ravens, especially with their offense since he is their leading receiver this season. So far, the Ravens have won only two out of eight games played.
