A report from the L.A. Times has confirmed that the first official trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of "Assassin's Creed" is scheduled to launch tomorrow, May 11. The report also reveals several key plot details regarding the film, how it ties into the video game series, and what plans the studios have for any potential sequels.
According to the report, actor Michael Fassbender stated that he will be playing Callum Lynch in the modern day and his ancestor Aguilar, who lived in the fifteenth century. Fassbender did confirm that his main focus was on portraying Callum Lynch as the character is the main focus of the story.
Just like the video games, it is revealed that Lynch will be abducted by Abstergo Industries and will use the Animus machine to access the memories of his ancestors that are within his DNA. This is done in order to stop the Templars, which have existed for centuries, from obtaining complete control over the world and to stop them from gaining ancient technology.
"Callum doesn't belong to anything, doesn't have a family," explained Fassbender, differentiating his character from Desmond Miles, the main protagonist of the video games. "We thought it would be interesting to have somebody that was disconnected be faced with what it means to join something so sacrificial."
Several new images, released by the Omelete, further accentuate the differences between the two time periods. One image shows Callum Lynch being strapped down to what may be the Animus machine while the other image showcases his ancestor Aguilar fighting off several enemies. Another image showcases Fassbender and Cotillard together.
It is undetermined if the enemies Aguilar is fighting in the image are members of the Templars or are simply guards or ruffians from the fifteenth century, aiming to halt Aguilar from reaching his goals.
"Assassin's Creed' opens in theaters this Dec. 21.
