An auction of artwork by Alexander Moffat has raised £2,600 for SCIAF's Syria Refugee Appeal.

The Scottish artist created the pastel sketches during concerts by tenor and classical guitarist Martin Aelred.

The two concerts were held during Lentfest, the annual cultural festival run by the Archdiocese of Glasgow Art Project (AGAP).

Moffat drew inspiration for each of the 20 pieces of art from the music performed by Aelred during the concerts.

The art was auctioned at St Aloysius church hall in Glasgow with the aid of auctioneer Campbell Armour from Lyon and Turnbull.

Aelred was present at the auction along with supporters of SCIAF, the Scottish Catholic development agency.

SCIAF's Head of Communications and Education Philippa Bonella said she was delighted by the amount of money raised by the auction.

"The auction was not only a fantastic fundraising event it was a great way to bring our supporters together, learn a little more about the situation in Syria, and at the same time enjoy a lovely evening of art and music," she said.

"We would like to pay special thanks to all those who took part in making the auction a great success, to Martin and Alexander, to Campbell for running the auction, and also to Stephen Callaghan from AGAP for his support and hard work throughout."

Stephen Callaghan, of AGAP, said the art and concerts had raised awareness and support for a good cause.

"The concerts and the artwork created highlight the profound social service of the arts to those at home and abroad, culturally and as a vehicle for charitable giving," he said.

"This is at the heart of what AGAP hopes to achieve through initiatives like Lentfest and we are glad to support SCIAF in their work."

The money raised will go towards providing shelter, hygiene kits, medical care and other support for Syrian refugees.
