'Agent Carter' season 2 cancelled or renewed: Show may get renewed for season 2

"Agent Carter" just ended its 8-episode run on ABC, neatly serving as an introduction to the world following the events in "Captain America: First Avenger," when Steve Rogers was lost to the ice and was presumed dead. The show has been appraised by critics and fans alike, and now it appears that it will be renewed for a second season.

The show has garnered high praise from fans and critics, scoring a 97 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, despite the critical acclaim of the show, ABC has not yet officially announced its renewal for season 2.

At the Television Critics Association press conference held Jan 14., ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee told the press that the odds are in the show's favor, saying, "We feel very optimistic."

It was also mentioned that episode 3 of "Agent Carter" garnered 5.1 million views, almost twice the ratings that the other Marvel/ ABC series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." got in the same period the previous year.

In comparison, the "Once Upon a Time" finale garnered 5.6 million views and was still given the green light for a new season. In general, "Agent Carter" has placed itself in safer grounds, but ABC might still cancel the show since it falls behind the network's big hits such as "Modern Family."

Given that Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is the most recurring female character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is also set to make an appearance in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," her popularity leads to the speculation that the producers of the show will eventually green light a second season.

The films, particularly "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," suggest that Peggy Carter was the person responsible for forming S.H.I.E.L.D. along with Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) and Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones).

As this has not been shown during the 8-episode run of "Agent Carter," fans have speculated that season 2 would focus on this, tying the series up with "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and the modern MCU films.
