'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers: Alaric's grief lingers in new episodes

Alaric's (Matt Davis) misery begins when Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) died in TVD season 6. The CW

Alaric (Matt Davis) may have had the most painful experience in the previous season of "The Vampire Diaries," and his misery will linger when the supernatural drama returns for its seventh season.

In an interview with "TVD" executive producer Julie Plec posted by Zap2it, Alaric's gloomy fate after the death of his wife Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) and their unborn twins could turn from bad to worse.

"This is not an easy transition for him. He's already been through so much and now he's going through this. This is about as horrible and despicable a thing that could happen," Plec shared.

Alaric also has to deal with the curse that put his dear friend Elena (Nina Dobrev) to eternal slumber. The series executive producer said that recovering from the pain will not be easy for the vampire-turned human.

"He's going to explore his grief in some unconventional ways involving a lot of booze and some secret desires that involve psychics and witches to try to contact the dead and God knows what else," she said.

Plec explained that before the scenes for season 6 were filmed, she had a word with Davis to tell him what his character will have to go through. According to the executive producer, the actor found Alaric's situation to be extremely mean, but she said that as a friend, she wants to push David's acting prowess to the limit through those scenes.

But Plec also said that Alaric will be able to move past the pain as "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 progresses.

Meanwhile, Elena's death has paved the way for more characters to appear in Mystic Falls. According to the Entertainment Weekly, new recurring characters to be played by Justice Leak, Jaiden Kaine, Tim Kang, and Todd Lasance will be introduced when the series returns this fall.

Leak will portray the role of the stubborn heretic named Malcolm, while Klaine will be a dangerous heretic named Beau. Kang will play the role of the laidback stoner named Oscar who is surprisingly connectd to the Salvatores, while Lasance will be  the charming but feared immortal named Julian.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 9, on The CW.
