The Pirate Bay, KickAss Torrents, Extra Torrent news: KAT shutdown shifts traffic to other sites

With the shutdown of Kick Ass Torrents, other websites now experience traffic surges, particularly popular sites like The Pirate Bay and Extra Torrent. However, even with increase in traffic, the popular torrent sites continue with an intermittent online presence due to crackdowns.

KickAss Torrents shut down around two months ago, after its alleged owner was arrested. Meanwhile, other websites like Torrentz also closed up shop. This led to several million users shifting their searches to other torrent sites.

In the figures gathered by Torrent Freak, popular torrent download sites like TPB has a continuous uptick in website traffic, gaining as much as 67 percent additional users over their average, or at least several million daily torrent downloaders. The industry follower surmised that the shift in user base may have even contributed to The Pirate Bay gaining ground against other torrent sites and having the top spot as the largest torrent site.

Meanwhile, the biggest beneficiary of KickAss Torrents' shutdown seems to be Extra Torrent. Supposedly, the website has gathered almost double its daily users since KAT closed, with a surge in website traffic as much as 101% increase. With the increase in numbers, Extra Torrent says that it is here to stay. ExtraTorrent's SaM said, "We always think and dream of growing and we indeed plan to keep growing."

However, it remains to be seen if these websites can maintain their leads, since authority crackdown continues. The Pirate Bay, for example, continues an up and down online presence, even with migration to the Deep Web. TPB's biggest concern is maintaining its physical servers. In addition, with many users trying out other sites since KaT's loss, other players are readying to enter the torrent arena. According to speculations, one such player is Kim Dotcom, who is preparing to relaunch his MegaUpload platform by next year.
