'Punisher' solo series update: Jon Bernthal teases potential future in the MCU

Jon Bernthal as The Punisher Netflix

One of the strongest elements of "Daredevil" season 2 is the inclusion of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle aka The Punisher. Actor Charlie Cox, who plays the titular Daredevil, has already voiced his support for a solo "Punisher" series on Netflix, and now Bernthal has spoken regarding his opinions and the potential future of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking to Complex, Bernthal revealed that his priority right now is not just tied to any hopes of keeping the character active in the MCU but to keep the character active in any shape or form, which hints that at this point even a mature-rated animated series or cameo appearances will do so long as they make Frank Castle relevant.

"For me, it's not a question of what they want to do with a character, it's more, how are they going to do it, and who's going to be the ones to do it," he explained. "This character is in my bones now, he's in my blood. If they want to go forward in any way, for me it's just really going to be about making sure we do it in a way that's raw and intense. I want to push the envelope. I wanna alienate more of the audience and try to bring them back."

A solo series on Netflix has been hinted at for some time, although the streaming network has yet to confirm if one is indeed in development now that the audiences have responded positively to Bernthal's portrayal of the iconic character.

Bernthal also worked hand-in-hand with Tom Holland, who was later cast as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, and the two shared some time together as Bernthal prepared Holland for his role in the MCU. Fans have taken this as a sign that Bernthal may later be featured, along with Daredevil and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), in a future MCU film.

"Daredevil" season 2 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
