Outlander season 4 sees Brianna get caught up in the American Revolution

Sophie Skelton has opened up about what her character, Brianna, will be experiencing when Outlander season 4 airs later this year.

We're just a few months away from the end of Droughtlander and the cast have dropping some major teasers about the upcoming season that are only getting us more excited to watch the show when it returns to Starz in November 2018.

And it seems like the daughter of Jamie and Claire is going to be getting much more air time in this season as she goes back in time to the days of the American Revolution in a bid to save her mom and dad.

"We see Brianna go back in time to the kind of carefree '70's, and then we see the juxtaposition of the 1800's, how that's really different for Brianna," says Skelton in an interview with BriefTake.

"And then she finds out some information about her parents and decides to go back in time to save their lives and change the course of history, and she sort of gets caught up in the American Revolution, just the corruption of the times."

Skelton explains how it will be a big adjustment for Brianna going from the carefree Seventies all the way back to the 1800s and a world where slavery was the norm.

And it seems like it won't be all plain sailing for her, but rather she will endure her own share of trauma.  But Skelton said she hoped Brianna's experiences would help people today who have gone through a similar ordeal.

"So hopefully again it will be one of those things that helps victims of abuse and seeing it through a character's eyes again will allow people to have more empathy to go through what Brianna goes through, but also helps victims too," she told BriefTake.

"But it's interesting because you do see a modern woman out of her time dealing with problems that she wouldn't even see in her day."

Season 4 of Outlander is based on Diana Gabaldon's book, Drums of Autumn, and those who have read the book will know what the trauma is that Skelton is alluding to.

Cast in the role of the hideous villain Steven Bonnet is Ed Speleers of Downton Abbey fame, someone who does something terrible to Brianna despite actually owing his life to her father Jamie.

It will be interesting to see how his addition to the show will influence the plot and what his ultimate fate will be.
