'Mistresses' season 4 cancelled or renewed? what to expect

ABC still remains silent about possible renewal of "Mistresses." Facebook/ABC

If the ratings of the finale of "Mistresses" will be the basis of its renewal, ABC would not be giving the sexy drama another season to continue its story.

Cartermatt reports that "Gone Girl" posted an all-time low rating, garnering a measly 0.6 average in the 18–49 demographic. The figure certainly does not help the show's chances of a renewal, which according to the website, were not enormous to begin with. If that is the case, what will now happen to the cliffhangers that the show has left for viewers to ponder?

While season 3 uncovered the mystery killer of Luca (Noam Jenkins), fans were still left with a lot of questions regarding their favorite mistresses. Even showrunners Rina Mimoun and K.J. Steinberg admitted that had they known it was their last season, they would have chosen a different closure for the drama series.

Mimoun has previously told TV Line that they were hopeful for a season renewal. She did reveal, however, that up to that time, they still did not know what the show's fate would be, as the network remained silent about the topic.

"I don't think we're dead in the water. But I don't know that we're not. We haven't gotten any strong indications of a renewal... but they haven't told us it's over," Mimoun said.

Meanwhile, Steinberg reported that there was definitely ""some poking around and interest," happening, so fans should not scrap them out yet. She said that they were keeping their fingers crossed that they would have the opportunity to continue the story and solve the dilemma they left in the season 3 finale.

The two also divulged that leaving a cliffhanger ending was a sort of gamble, as ABC might be enticed to announce the renewal based on the "jaw-dropping" finish.

"If we'd tied it all up in a bow, it might've been incentive for them not to pick us up," Steinberg said.
