'Marco Polo' season 3 spoilers: Despite rumors of cancellation, Kublai Khan tipped to have bigger role

"Marco Polo" season 2 ended on a brief cliffhanger and yet Netflix has not announced the confirmation of a third season, leading many fans to wonder if the series has been cancelled. However, despite the possibility of cancellation, rumors are rampant that Benedict Wong, who plays Kublai Khan, will be returning for a big character arc in season 3.

According to a report from CrossMap, Marco Polo did not stay with Kublai Khan for too long and it is likely that at some point Kublai Khan will no longer be a major part of the show as the story focuses on Marco Polo's adventures elsewhere in China and back in Europe. However, the character is not likely going to leave just yet.

Fans speculate that one of the reasons Benedict Wong has been speculated to leave the show or why the series is delayed is because of Wong's current involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he plays a sorcerer in the upcoming film "Doctor Strange." It is possible that the studios are merely waiting for his schedule to open before "Marco Polo" season 3 begins production.

Parent Herald reports that one of the most popular theories is that Kublai Khan survived the siege from the season 2 finale and that in season 3 he'll be waging a war against the mysterious Prester John. A previous report from The Wrap hinted that this Prester John may even be a Keraite leader such as Toghrul Khan. 

The report continued to explain that in the historical records and the diary of Marco Polo there have been mentions of Prester John and the Khans did have both a war and relation with the Keraites. It is possible that these elements may weave their way into "Marco Polo" season 3. 

Netflix has yet to confirm or deny any of the rumors as well as to announce when and if "Marco Polo" season 3 will premiere.
