'Blue Bloods' season 7 spoilers: Tom Selleck returns Sept. 23

CBS

According to a report from Deadline, actor Tom Selleck has signed a new deal that would confirm he is returning to reprise his role of Police Commissioner Frank Reagan for CBS' "Blue Bloods" season 7. Frank is known for being not just the patriarch of the police department but of his family, of which many members are also police officers.

Frank was last seen playing a pivotal role in the season 6 finale, "Blowback," which aired this past May. The episode focused on Frank and the entire Reagan family working alongside the District Attorney and the mayor after Officer Eric Russell (Carter Redwood) shot a teenage offender, claiming it was self-defense.

As stated in the report, production for season 7 has just begun earlier this month and will see the Reagan family members, most of which are officers of the law, continue to struggle as they balance their personal lives at home along with their professional duties at the department.

With Selleck returning, actors Donnie Wahlberg, Amy Carlson, Bridget Moynihan, Marissa Ramirez, Will Estes, Tony Terraciano, Sami Gayle and Andrew Terraciano are also set to return.

Deadline also reveals that despite the show airs on the low-traffic Friday night slot it has still managed to rank as the fifth most watched broadcast drama series, with an average of 13.1 million viewers, for the entire 2015-2016 season. CBS also confirmed that it is their most watched-scripted show on a Friday ever since the 2002-2003 season of "Law and Order: SVU."

The report also points out that the show is crucial for CBS's international market and is streamed via Netflix, Amazon and Hulu in other markets around the world. According to Deadline, the show is streamed to 200 territories in the world and is also one of the highest rated primetime shows in the US.

Although the series is still in production, CBS has already announced that "Blue Bloods" season 7 will premiere by this Sept. 23.
