'The Big Bang Theory' season 9 spoilers: what's coming next season

"The Big Bang Theory" just aired its season 8 finale and fans of the series were shocked with several cliffhanger scenes.

[Spoiler Warning] Penny and Leonard were in their car heading to Las Vegas but weren't sure about getting married, and Sheldon ended the episode by pulling a surprise on Amy.

Penny and Leonard were supposed to drive straight to Las Vegas and quickly get married but during the finale episode, the experimental physicist confessed he kissed a girl during a research trip five years ago. Obviously, this is going to be addressed in the premiere episode of season 9, but showrunner Steven Molaro revealed that the wedding hasn't been called off yet.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Molaro explained that the couple is still in that car and is still headed for Las Vegas. The elephant in the room — Leonard's intimate moment with someone else some years ago — is going to be addressed before the rest of season 9 moves on.

The bigger plot arc involves Sheldon and Amy. The finale of season 8 almost ended with the couple going their separate ways after the latter broke up with the theoretical physicist, complaining that their relationship was moving at a snail's pace. During the episode's last scene, Sheldon brought out an engagement ring and finally proposed to her.

Molaro explained that Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy, will remain a series regular for the show.

"Without a doubt, absolutely yes, Mayim Bialik will remain a regular... She's not going anywhere."

This might give fans some hope to the future of Sheldon and Amy's relationship, especially if they marry during season 9. This would, of course, change the dynamics of the show and may force Sheldon and Leonard to finally alter their living arrangements now that Leonard and Penny, presumably, will live together while Amy and Sheldon will have to figure out where and how they'll relocate.

Molaro also confirmed that they have not yet begun writing the premiere episode of season 9 but they are taking all of the above points into consideration as they plan where "The Big Bang Theory" is heading.
