5 Bible passages for Mothers' Day

Mothers' Day is just around the corner in the United Kingdom, and many are trying to find the best gift to make their mums happy for the occasion as it only comes round once a year.

While flowers and greeting cards are on top of the list along with a spa day or dinner treat, you can always keep it simple with a few words of gratitude for the woman who gave you life and cared for you more than others.

And what better way to find inspiration than the Bible?

Here are some choice Bible verses to express one's regard for one's beloved mom

Proverbs 31:25-31

"Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all."

In this passage, the Bible credits mothers for their strength amid adversities, compassion amid pain and her role in raising strong families. It speaks of a mother's extraordinary heart and love.

Exodus 20:12

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

This passage speaks of the importance of one's parents as well as the virtue of being thankful for them as part of God's blessing.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

Perhaps one of the most fitting passages that describe a mother's love, this Bible verse is often associated with romantic love but upon closer inspection, speaks of the love that is unconditional and honest and enduring, the kind of love a mother gives to her child without question.

Ephesians 6:1-3

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life."

One of the most important commandments of the Lord is to honor our parents as they are the ones that have given life and sacrificed so much for the good of their children.

Proverbs 23:22-25

"Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice."

This passage speaks of honoring one's parents, no matter what stage of life they are in, or whether they grow old and forgetful. This passage reminds children of their parents' love and patience when they are young so that they may return the favor when their parents grow old.

Proverbs 6:20-22

"My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching. Bind them on your heart always; tie them around your neck. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you."

A parent's love is lasting and the strong foundation they give their children plays a major role in the way they live their lives. Their wisdom should guide the children and be their source of strength irrespective of the distance between them or what problems may exist.

Mothers' Day is celebrated in the UK on March 6.
