iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3 to embed fingerprint sensors; release expected in Q4

iPad Air

The latest report is that the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3, as well as all forthcoming iPhones, will be made with fingerprint sensors embedded in the home button.

The Chinese language components website cecB2B.com reports that a batch of Touch ID sensors making their way into the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 have already been manufactured by TSMC - the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

According to BGR, TSMC subsidiaries Xintec and Suzhou Crystal Semiconductor have made the sensors.

There has been some speculation that the company would replace the 8-inch processing method utilised for the iPhone 5s, with a new 12-inch fab processing method.

It's possible that switching to the 12-inch would improve on the iPhone 5S's Touch ID.

Whatever the case, previous reports have tipped Q2 as the start of production of the Touch ID sensor.

TSMC is the same company that will be producing A8 chips for use in forthcoming Apple iOS devices.

Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities has previously reported that the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will be landing some time around October/November.

The expectation is that Apple will embed the fingerprint sensor straight into the iPad home buttons, similar to the iPhone 5S.

There are no details as yet on the device's price tag.
