"X-Men: Days of Future Past" altered the timeline of the "X-Men" film universe and it appears that the next flick, "X-Men: Apocalypse," is set to change it again with events that will resonate through all future films in the franchise.
IGN recently spoke with "Days of Future Past" producer and writer Simon Kinberg. The latter revealed some information regarding how "Apocalypse" would affect future "X-Men" films as well as the spin-off titles.
"The result of the aftermath of 'Apocalypse' is something that will impact the course of history in the world in much the same way that the end of 'Days of Future Past' did," Kinberg told IGN. "From 1973 forward, the world knew about mutants. A mutant took a football stadium and dropped it on the White House."
Kinberg continued to explain that instead of ignoring how "Days of Future Past" and "Apocalypse" alter history, all future films will embrace the changes and utilize them the same way the Battle of New York in "Avengers" affected all Phase 2 films in the MCU, even in just slight ways, as well as related TV series such as "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Daredevil."
"Apocalypse" will not only affect future "X-Men" films but also the spin-off projects "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds, and "Gambit," starring Channing Tatum. It is also speculated that the new "Fantastic Four" reboot will crossover with the "X-Men" franchise so even that film may be affected by "Days of Future Past" and "Apocalypse."
As cited by Cinema Blend, "X-Men: Apocalypse" will end the trilogy started by "First Class" and "Days of Future Past." Actress Jennifer Lawrence previously stated that "Apocalypse" would be her last film and it is speculated that the same can be said for stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.
Future films will then be picked by the new cast of characters set to appear in "Apocalypse" such as Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan as younger versions of Jean Grey and Cyclops, respectively.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on May 27, 2016.
