One of the strongest elements in the original "X-Men" film trilogy was the relationship between Cyclops (James Marsden) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). According to director Bryan Singer, in a report from Entertainment Weekly, "X-Men: Apocalypse" will explore how these two got together and how their relationship developed.
The film is set in the 1980s and the two characters will be younger, played now by Sophie Turner as Jean and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, and according to Singer, this film will reveal how they met and what their outlook is on the life of a mutant and the group that Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) is trying to form, the group that would become the X-Men.
Singer revealed that when Cyclops first arrives, he has no control over his powers, keeping his eyes closed. This essentially makes him blind until he gets his special glasses that allows him to see, enabling Cyclops to see Jean Grey for the first time.
"This is all new to Scott Summers and he doesn't like it and he doesn't like school," Singer explained in the report. "And Jean, she not only has her telekinesis and her telepathy, but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn't quite know what it is."
Fans of the franchise will recall that this inner darkness growing inside of Jean is the Phoenix Force, the entity that burst out in "X-Men: The Last Stand." However, the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" erased that timeline and it was revealed that Cyclops and Jean managed to stay alive somehow. This hints that the Dark Phoenix story arc will play out very differently this time around.
According to a report from Collider, this new take on their relationship also seems to indicate that Xavier is not suppresing Jean's powers or her memory, hinting that the manner of the Phoenix's resurrection will be different from how it happened in "X2."
"X-Men: Apocalypse" opens in theaters this May 27.
