The Toronto Raptors added a veteran reinforcement for next season as power forward Luis Scola joined the team for a reported one-year, $3 million deal.
Scola is an eight-year veteran who already played for the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns and Indiana Pacers.
Last season, during his second year with the Pacers, he played in 81 games and averaged 9.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Scola, known as a defensive player, has proven that he can also score during his time with the Rockets and Suns, where he averaged double-digits in scoring.
The addition of Scola is a good move for the Raptors after they lost power forward Amir Johnson to the Boston Celtics.
Scola is not the only acquisition for Toronto, who also signed up budding point guard Cory Joseph and veteran small forward DeMarre Carroll.
Joseph, 22, spent all four of his previous NBA seasons with Western Conference powerhouse and 2014 champion San Antonio Spurs. The point guard averaged 6.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 18.9 minutes per game last season.
"We have watched Cory grow as a player and see him as a great fit in our system. He is another player with a defensive skill-set that will be an asset to our team," Raptors president and general manager Masai Ujiri said in a statement posted on the team's website.
Joseph is only the second Canadian-born player to play for the Raptors following center Jamaal Magloire, who was with the team since 2011 and is now serving as an assistant coach.
Meanwhile, Carroll played the past two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, who entered the playoffs last season with the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
Carroll, 28, was a key factor in the Hawks' campaign last season, and the Raptors hope he can be the same with them this year. The small forward averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals last season.
Carroll is known for his defense but is also an efficient contributor on offense and can hit from the outside. "We want to welcome a player that we've always admired....A great human being we are bringing to our program, and we feel very very privileged," Ujiri said about signing up Carroll.
