Back in 2014 "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman stated that "no one is safe," indicating that even lead character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) or fan-favorite Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) could die. However, as reported by Vulture, Kirkman did say during the New York Comic-Con panel that there was one character he wouldn't kill off.
According to Kirkman, the character he didn't want to see killed off in the series is none other than Carol (Melissa McBride), a character he killed off early on in the comic books.
"The Carol that's in the comic was my attempt to show just how broken an individual can become from the zombie apocalypse," Kirkman explained to the crowd. "The Carol on the show, which is a much better character let's be honest, actually is made stronger by all the more horrible things that happen to her on the show."
In the original comic books of "The Walking Dead," Carol died during the early story arcs while her daughter survived and was later adopted at the Hilltop Colony by Maggie (Lauren Cohan). In the series, this was reversed with Sophia (Madison Lintz) dying in season 2 while Carol developed into one of the most vicious members of Rick's group.
As pointed out in a report from Uproxx, this doesn't necessarily mean that Kirkman and the team behind "The Walking Dead" won't eventually kill Carol off but at least for the time being she does seem to be on the safer side of the fence. When Kirkman will kill off a character, he explained that it won't be done lightly.
"If I didn't have any regrets, if I didn't still wish that those characters were around, then I feel like I wouldn't have done my job."
With Carol safe, most of the danger looms on characters such as Daryl, a character Kirkman continually teased of killing off due to the character's popularity, and Glenn (Steven Yeun) who is expected to die once the villain Negan has been introduced.
"The Walking Dead" season 6 continues with episode 2, "JSS," this Oct. 18.
