Earlier this year at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Tour, Showtime network boss David Devins confirmed that "The Affair" had been officially renewed for season 4. Rumored to return before the year ends, the hit drama series will reportedly center on a separated couple finding their way back to love again.

According to a previous report, spoilers suggested that Cole (Joshua Jackson) and Alison (Ruth Wilson) may rekindle their romance in season 4. Previously, viewers saw Alison try to win Cole back and fix their family, despite him already having a new wife. It can be recalled during the show's earlier season that Alison left him for another man, Noah (Dominic West), whom she also decided to leave later on, so she can reunite with Cole.

However, there is also another rumor that says Alison will win joint custody of their daughter Joanie (Savannah Grella). The young girl currently lives with her dad and his wife Luisa (Catalina Sandino Moreno). While the stepmother previously offered to help Alison in the custody battle, it was only because she wanted both of them out of Cole's life. If the former couple do get back together, there will no longer be a need for a joint custody as Alison and Cole can raise Joanie together.

Whether or not these plot speculations turn out to be true, fans must wait for official announcements from the show and the network regarding season 4.

"The Affair" is currently on a par with "Shameless," which is Showtime's longest-running series as it reportedly gathers almost 1.5 million viewers per episode, according to Den of Geek. The show is rumored to return for its fourth season in late 2017, possibly in October, if it follows the schedule of the first two seasons, or in November, if it follows the premiere schedule of season 3.
