'Super Smash Bros. 4' DLC ending soon - what to expect

 Nintendo

"Super Smash Bros." on the Wii U and 3DS has seen massive success since its launch and numerous DLC packages have added new characters to the roster, with Cloud Strife from "Final Fantasy VII" being the latest addition. However, director Masahiro Sakurai stated that DLC for the game are coming to an end.

In an interview showcased in the book "Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets" (via Source Gaming), Sakurai mostly discussed the future of the "Fire Emblem" franchise and did touch on the possibility of future "Fire Emblem" characters appearing on "Super Smash Bros."

"How much a character will please the players, how unique they are--there are a lot of factors that go into deciding a character's inclusion," he explained. "I don't know whether Fire Emblem will have many more games in the future, but it's not as if we have a stipulation that says, 'We have to include the protagonist of the next Fire Emblem game.'"

Sakurai also stated there is no confirmation that there will even be a new "Super Smash Bros." game following the one on Wii U and 3DS. This is when he confirmed that DLC for the current entry in the fighting game franchise is indeed ending very soon.

While Sakurai expressed concerns about the future of the fighting game, especially in regard to whether or not the staff can do another game without his direction, there is a very high chance that even without his involvement, Nintendo will continue on with another "Super Smash Bros." game.

After all, "Super Smash Bros. 4" sold over 4 million units on the Wii U, making it one of the console's bestselling games, and sold over 7.3 million units on the 3DS. This makes it one of Nintendo's bestselling games in recent years, a testament that the franchise is revered as heavily by fans as much as their main IPs such as "Mario" and the "Legend of Zelda."
