'Suicide Squad' spoilers - Karen Fukuhara talks Katana and her powers

Karen Fukuhara as Katana in Suicide Squad Warner Bros. Pictures

"Suicide Squad" will focus primarily on the villains, the titular Suicide Squad aka Task Force X, but not every member is a villain. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) is a military agent and it turns out that Tatsu Yamashiro aka Katana (Karen Fukuhara) is also one of the good guys coming along to ensure the Suicide Squad finish their task.

Speaking to Comic Book, Fukuhara revealed that the film version of Katana will be very faithful to the comic book source material. In the comic books Katana is a superhero who eventually became a member of the Justice League and owns a special sword, the Soultaker, which carries the soul of her late husband Maseo.

"She's very loyal to Amanda Waller and Rick Flag. She works under them and keeps a rowdy bunch in line. She's a protector and a fierce warrior," the actress explains. "She has her husband's soul in her sword and I got to talk to Maseo throughout the film and yes, of course that's in the film, but you'll have to wait and see how much of that plays into the movie."

Her statements imply that she may be an agent working directly under Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and may be one of the agents sent in to keep the Suicide Squad in place, ensuring they never stray from the mission or end up causing more trouble than what they were sent to stop.

Katana's connections to Amanda Waller and ARGUS were also touched in the CW series "Arrow" but in the television series Tatsu has no super powers and her sword was an ordinary blade. The film version will keep the supernatural elements and a few clips from the trailers have shown Katana's sword glowing green whenever she uses it.

Fukuhara also stated that she did all of her own stunts except for one diving stunt, ensuring that audiences will see no trickery involved when Katana wields her blade in "Suicide Squad."

"Suicide Squad" opens in theaters this Aug. 5.
