"Star Trek Beyond" is being helmed by director Justin Lin, who is most famous for handling several of the "Fast and the Furious" movies. Many fans have expressed their concern regarding this, and in response actor John Cho, who plays Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, has spoken up and praised the director's work on the film.
"Justin Lin cared about the mythology, he cared about the world, he cared about getting it right, he cared about moving the characters forward," Cho explained to Famous Monsters magazine (via Trek Movie).
Cho explained that in the beginning they all had their questions given that director J.J. Abrams, who helmed the first two films in the rebooted franchise, was not returning for the third film. In the end, Cho explained that they were pleasantly surprised as they were able to quickly ease into working with Lin on the film.
It is noted that Abrams, a big fan of "Star Wars" more so than "Star Trek," will remain as executive producer for the third film.
However, even the best director would not be able to make a good film if the script wasn't good. Fortunately, Cho had good things to say regarding the script that was done by actor Simon Pegg, a self-confessed "Star Trek" fan, and Doug Jung.
"What you're going to get when you ask Simon Pegg to pen a script is a very human touch. And a warm touch," the actor explained. "It just felt like they were looking for human moments."
As stated in a previous report, the script and the director aim to "deconstruct" the essence of the franchise and go back to the intellectual nature of the series while still maintaining a level of high-octane action, as seen in the trailer for the movie.
"Star Trek Beyond" opens in theaters on July 22.
