The new Spider-Man films under Sony and Marvel Studios promises to be different, and the first signs come from the attachment of writers/ directors Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley. In an interview with NPR, the duo finally confirmed that they are indeed penning the film and explained their approach to writing "Spider-Man."
"He's a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he's an outcast and a geek through humor," Daley explained with regard to Peter Parker aka Spider-Man's personality. "It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have."
The two have previously worked on comedies such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," "Horrible Bosses," and are currently working on the latest "Vacation" flick. It is only logical to assume that their comedic background will be put to good use in the new "Spider-Man" film.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also stated as much to IGN during a press release for "Avengers: Age of Ultron," saying, "When he puts that mask on in the comics, he has a non-stop wit that is almost as troublesome to the bad guys he is fighting as his webs and agility. And we feel we really haven't seen that in the movies. That's just the tip of the iceberg."
Films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe go above and beyond being just comic book adaptations. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" proved to be a successful spy/ crime thriller dressed as a comic book movie while "Guardians of the Galaxy" was the comic book version of a space opera in the veins of "Star Wars."
According to a report from Cinema Blend, it is possible that the new "Spider-Man" may be Marvel's first full-fledged comedy film that still retains the action and visual tropes of the superhero genre.
"Spider-Man" will open in theaters on July 28, 2017 but the titular character, played by Tom Holland, will make his first appearance in "Captain America: Civil War" this May 6, 2016.
