'Resident Evil 7' news: Update on upcoming title and other Capcom franchises

Resident Evil HD Remaster Capcom

The recent issue of Dengeki PlayStation (translation via Siliconera) features an interview with Capcom's Masachika Kiwata, who serves as the producer for the "Resident Evil" franchise. In the interview, Kiwata was asked if there was any development going on for "Resident Evil 7."

"We're currently not at a state to talk about it... but please stay tuned," was all he answered. Fans speculate that the title is indeed in development, but Capcom has chosen to be silent about the game's details. Otherwise, Kiwata would have stated that there is no "Resident Evil 7" currently at work.

Enthusiasm for a new main title has been low for many fans, particularly after "Resident Evil 6," which was poorly received by players and critics alike. Many complain that the series has lost its "horror" roots and is now a game franchise focused solely on third-person action, an issue that Kiwata addressed.

"Since there's been more spinoff titles, I can see how it can be perceived in such a way," he explained. "And of course I believe that we should produce titles that bring out the horror. I'm thinking about it and also preparing for it."

At the time of writing, Capcom is currently working on a multiplayer shooter spinoff titled "Umbrella Corps," which appears to stray even further from the horror genre as it leans more into the pure action-oriented gameplay and theme. The game is set to take place after the events of "Resident Evil 6."

As for the other known franchises under Capcom's belt such as "Devil May Cry" and "Dragon's Dogma," Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi simply stated, "They're also things I'd like to personally do, but there are no plans [for now]."

"Dragon's Dogma" was launched back in 2012, and there have been rumors ever since of a sequel. Meanwhile, the "Devil May Cry" franchise saw a recent reboot with 2013's "DmC: Devil May Cry," which was developed by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom.
