'Reign' season 3 news: Nostradamus to return?

Rossif Sutherland as Nostradamus CW

One of the most popular characters introduced in season 2 of "Reign" was the French foreseer Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland). In a recent interview, showrunner Laurie McCarthy explained that the foreseer will be coming back in season 3 although perhaps not as often as some fans would hope for.

"He will be in the series intermittently, but he's still really pissed at Catherine, so I don't think he really feels a great desire to be under her thumb again," McCarthy told Entertainment Weekly.

She also added that Nostradamus will be more akin to "a visitor to court" instead of being one of the major players whispering advices to the Queen.

However, McCarthy did not specify when fans could expect to see Nostradamus in season 3. As in season 2, the character appeared only sparingly, making a more impactful arrival during the season 2 finale. It is likely that he will be used similarly in season 3, appearing only as a guide, altering events behind the scenes.

Nostradamus proved to be a selfless ally in season 2 after he did his best to help Queen Catherine (Megan Follows) while she was up for execution. He was also revealed to be secretly helping Francis (Toby Regbo) who was dying from his illness. In a show filled with betrayal, Nostradamus could be seen as the only true hero trying to help people.

Actress Rachel Skarsten, who portrays Queen Elizabeth, also noted that there will be another surprise visitor to the French court other than Nostradamus. She also immediately clarified that this surprise guest is not going to be Condé (Sean Teale), who Mary (Adelaide Kane) refused to follow in the season 2 finale.

A separate report from Entertainment Weekly does specify that the drama will grow as season 3 will explore the Elizabethan courts with Catherine herself being the first "guest" to arrive.

"Reign" season 3 premieres at 8 p.m .EST on Oct. 9 on The CW network.
