In an exclusive interview with Game Informer, "Persona 5" director Katsura Hashino revealed several details regarding the highly anticipated RPG. In particular, Hashino discussed the characters and their places in the world's story and setting while also discussing the game's primary themes.
For one thing, the fifth entry in the franchise will no longer see heroes banding together to solve a mystery such as a murder in their school. Instead, they will be known as the "Phantom Thieves" and are students trying to break out from the society and have to face the adults and other authoritative figures that are blocking their way forward.
"Rather than getting drawn into a strange case, the team throws themselves into the fray. Through their actions, they draw the attention of an even greater enemy... That's how the game sets in motion," Hashino explained.
Elements of this are seen in the trailers. There are scenes in the trailers where a ball and chain are keeping students locked down to their desks and it is stated that the "Phantom Thieves" are trying to reform society by stealing people's hearts.
The main protagonist is described as an anti-hero who, like previous games, will be "silent and cool" but will also have a unique flair and "brash audacity" that puts him into the forefront of every event. His partner Ryuji is known for his mischievous personality and it is stated that this pairing is what makes them effective "Phantom Thieves."
Hashino remained secretive regarding Morgana's gender but he did explain that the cat-like character will be more than a mere mascot for the game. As a matter of fact, Morgana is touted as the mentor of the main cast of protagonists.
Hashino ended the interview with a direct message to players, hoping that they would enjoy the game's themes of vigilante activity and crime motifs, which he considered universal in nature despite the game being set in Japan.
"We hope you look forward to this title's gameplay, entering the world of warped human desires and casting judgment on the targets you find there."
"Persona 5" will launch for the PS3 and PS4 in 2016.
