'Person of Interest' season 5 spoilers: Shaw and Root's struggles

"Person of Interest" season 5 will see the return of Sarah Shahi as Shaw, which means there will be some time spent exploring Shaw's relationship with Root (Amy Acker). Speaking to Entertainment Weekly during the New York Comic Con, the actresses revealed that Shaw and Root's relationships and struggles will be a big part of season 5.

Shahi did not reveal if Shaw and Root would be getting together intimately as seen in previous seasons but she did explain that there would be "Shaw/Root stuff coming up." She also explained that they were aware of things fans were hoping to see and that they kept those desires in mind while filming the season.

However, it won't just be about Shaw coming back and then getting together with Root in an instant. Instead, the search for Shaw will play a pivotal part in the season, particularly for Root who is also determined to save the Machine.

Acker emphasized on this point when she explained, "For Team Machine, we've all been searching for Shaw, so we have this real dynamic between, do we put our energy into finding Shaw, or saving the Machine. That's where this season picks up, and it's a real struggle for my character."

While Root chooses between finding Shaw or saving the Machine, fans on the other hand have been petitioning to save the show itself. Season 5 is heavily speculated to be the last season for the show given how it has fewer episodes and its premiere has been moved to the mid-season.

In response to the possibility of season 5 being the end, "Person of Interest" star Michael Emerson stated that there will be "climaxes, transformations and endings of all sorts."

Despite this, CBS has not yet officially confirmed that the show is being cancelled. Confirmation will be announced when the network announces its lineup of renewals for the 2016 to 2017 season.

"Person of Interest" season 5 premieres early 2016.
