Microsoft Surface Phone release date, specs rumors: can it survive in a crowded market?

Considering the amount of success Microsoft has achieved in the software and computer industry, the American company couldn't get it right when it came to grabbing a share of the smartphone segment. The Redmond-based tech giant already made substantial investments in this particular industry but has not seen a return of it. With the ever-increasing dominance of Apple and Samsung in the smartphone business, is there really room for the rumored Microsoft Surface Phone?

Next year's upcoming line of highly anticipated smartphones includes the iPhone 8 and the Galaxy S8, while Microsoft's Surface Phone, although still unconfirmed, is lurking in the shadows of those two. But what sort of distinction does it have for consumers to even consider it as a competing device for the industry's leading flagship ranges? For one, Microsoft Devices' corporate vice president Panos Panay has said that they currently are working hard in order to provide consumers with a "revolutionary" Windows-based smartphone.

If one is to consider how previous Windows-powered smartphones fared in the market, it seems like there no is longer room for it, especially today with Google's Android and Apple iOS owning a huge chunk of the consumer market. Well, if the Windows-based mobile operating system does not do the trick, perhaps the hardware specifications and features will entice would-be buyers.

Accordingly, the Microsoft Surface Phone is a monster on the inside, highlighted by 8 GB of random access memory (RAM) and 512 GB of internal storage, although there are differences expected since the device is rumored to be offered in three variants. The processor is speculated to be Intel's Kaby Lake, although it is still a long shot considering that even mainstream forthcoming laptops and notebooks aren't sure they'll get this highly anticipated chipset on time. Other notable features include the 20-megapixel Carl Zeiss rear camera, a fingerprint scanner, and an AMOLED screen display.
