'Marco Polo' Season 3 release date, spoilers: Benedict Wong to return as Kublai Khan; focus on Prester John

Will Benedict Wong return as Kublai Khan in "Marco Polo" season 3? Netflix

With no official renewal announcement from Netflix, fans of Marco Polo are now worried that the streaming site will not pick up another season of the historical series.

Among rumors circulating online is the possibility that Benedict Wong, who stars as fan favorite character Kublai Khan, will not be returning to the show to reprise the role.

Some theorize that the actor may be too busy juggling his commitments especially after he was cast as part of Marvel's Doctor Strange opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.

According to a report by Parent Herald, the actor debunked the rumors and remains committed to the series as long as Netflix will renew the show.

However, a report by Game n Guide hints that a renewal could be faced with challenges as Netflix is considering the show's dipping ratings and budget issues.

Based on the report, the streaming giant is thinking of imposing budget cuts should it decide to pick up the series for a fresh season because it is currently one of the most expensive series on the network's roster.

Still, even as the show's fate hangs in the balance, show creator John Fusco expressed thankfulness for the opportunity to promote diversity through the show.

"At a time when there's much contention and strain surrounding Hollywood for its lack of diversity, I'm proud to be on the side that's breaking barriers. It demonstrates that you can have a series in the top ranks of Most Popular TV Shows while starring mostly Asian and minority actors. Secondly, it proves that viewers do not discriminate based on race; they are interested in quality programming and storytelling regardless of ethnicity and gender," he said to Deadline.

Should the series be picked up for another season, it has been reported that it would focus on the storyline of Prester John, a character instrumental in leading treasure hunters to Khan's kingdom.
