Donald Trump net worth 2016: Is the Republican presidential candidate worth what he claims he is?

During the presidential campaign in the US this year, Trump proclaimed that his net worth stands at a figure that's over $10 billion. One of the many interesting things about the Republican's electoral run is that the campaign was funded by the candidate himself.

Many donors to the Republican Party's electoral campaign were concerned about the possibility of Trump using their contributions as a means to repay his loan. However, Trump announced he has forgiven the loans, and will not go to any lengths to recover them in any manner.

The Guardian states that while Trump claimed to have loaned around $50 million to fund and execute the campaign, the value reported by the Federal Election Commission stands at a little over $45 million. This wouldn't be the first time the Republican nominee has overstated figures.

NY Times recollects other instances when Trump was prone to exaggeration. Among these is his claim regarding the $1 million fee he was offered for a talk on his business tactics, when in fact, the actual money he earned was $400,000. Another instance where Donald Trump may have gone overboard with respect to figures was when he asserted that the 1,282 units in his hotel in Las Vegas had been sold out in barely a week. The true number stood at somewhere around 300 units.

As for his current net worth, the truth behind the $10 billion mark remains to be established. Back in 2012, Wells Fargo Securities filed a statement to SEC on behalf of the real-estate-giant-turned-Republican-champion, according to which his then net worth stood over $4.2bn, with liquid assets of more than $250m. Skeptics continue to question the possibility that in the four years that have gone by since then, Trump has managed to more than double his net worth.
