'Avengers: Age of Ultron': James Spader speaks about being the robot baddie

The trailer for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is out, and it does precisely what it's meant to do — heighten the movie-going public's anticipation for the film. The second "Avengers" movie is not set to come out until May 1, 2015 though, so from now until then, moviegoers will have to settle for the clip, other trailers that are bound to follow, and some revelations from those behind the film.

Only recently, James Spader spoke out about his role as the ultimate baddie in the upcoming superhero flick. The 54-year-old actor doesn't appear in the movie, not looking like himself anyway, but he acted out the character and the production team captured his facial expressions and body movements, bringing to life one compelling nemesis to the superheroes.  He also gave the antagonist a truly menacing voice, calm and at the same time horrible.

In an interview with Total Film, Spader said, "There's a humorous aspect to him, which is something that drew me in from the very first conversation I had with Joss [Whedon]."

Ultron is a robot with artificial intelligence. Based on the trailer, he was initially hooked up to a computer system, but he eventually breaks free and now, he's out to annihilate the human race.

"In many ways he's a child, this character, because he's a brand new being who's just come to be," Spader explained. "And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge. So he's a very powerful, smart child."

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), it seems, is responsible for the emergence of this new planetary threat. According to the official synopsis, when the genius-billionaire "tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry," forcing the Avengers to get into action.

But Ultron looks like one villain that even the team of superheroes finds hard to beat. The trailer shows Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in a state of utter defeat and hopelessness. It remains to be seen how they are going to get through this crisis.

Spader became a household name because of his role as lawyer Alan Shore in "The Practice" and "Boston Legal," which earned him three Emmy awards, as well as for playing Robert California in "The Office."
