'Avatar 2' sequel plot rumors: prison theme, underwater locations

"Avatar 2" will reportedly focus on a prison theme. This is based on a statement by artist Gökşan Özman who is working on the film's official poster.

However, director James Cameron stated a few years back that the film will primarily use a lot of underwater scenes. This is said to be one of the reasons why "Avatar 2" has taken so long to be produced — because the production team is still waiting for the right kind of technology to be developed. They will need better equipment in order to film motion capture performances underwater.

The first "Avatar" film took place primarily in the skies of Pandora, but it appears that the next film will dive down the waters to explore the oceans of Pandora instead. Back in June, a report from Variety revealed just how much work Cameron has to do in order to complete "Avatar 2."

"It's a room ... which is covered floor to ceiling with images, characters, worlds, settings," said 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos. "It's the most amazing, breathtaking thing you've ever seen. His challenge is to put all of that in a movie."

Gianopulos also explained in the report that Cameron is already finished with the film's story and that all the pieces are being put in place. However, there is no confirmation from Cameron if the film will indeed involve a prison theme and there is no word if the prison is meant to hold humans or Na'vi inmates. The conflict between the two may have grown significantly since the battle that occurred in the first film.

"Avatar 2" is set to be released in December 2017 with the sequels "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4" to premiere in 2018 and 2019. All three films will reportedly be shot back-to-back, similar to how "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" films were produced.
