'Avatar 2' news: James Cameron also working on 'Avatar 3' and 'Avatar 4'

New updates have been released regarding the delay of James Cameron's award-winning sci-fi film "Avatar 2." 20th Century Fox

James Cameron is setting his eyes on releasing not just a sequel to the blockbuster hit "Avatar," but three more films.

In an interview with Montreal Gazette, the director and filmmaker Cameron is aiming to release the sequel to "Avatar" by December 2017, with part three and part four to come in 2018 and 2019 respectively. He adds that all three films will be shot simultaneously.

"Christmas of '17 is the target," Cameron said in his interview with Montreal Gazette. "At least, that's what we've announced. But I don't consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart." The director refers to the trio of films as a "meta-narrative," both standing as separate stories and one huge story as a whole at the same time.

The design aspect of the movie's production has been completed, taking almost two years to add a complete set of new creatures, landscapes and details to the world of Pandora. Cameron adds that the writing is still under process, but is close to completion.

According to updates by IMDB, Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington will be returning to portray their roles as the head of the Na'vi. Saldana will be playing her original role as Neytiri. At the end of the first film, viewers saw Jake Sully (Worthington) permanently transformed from a human being to a Na'vi native.

The film holds the record for being the most profitable in both the domestic and world. According to Box Office Mojo, "Avatar" earned a total of $2,787,965,087 worldwide and over $760 million in the domestic market.

"Avatar," first released in 2009, is a fantasy action film that follows the story of the discovery of the planet called Pandora, and the struggle of a native alien species called the Na'vi to preserve the culture and natural resources of the planet as a corporation of greedy humans try to harvest precious resources from the Na'vi's home.
