'Assassin's Creed' added to Xbox One backwards compatibility list

Assassin's Creed Ubisoft

Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson of Microsoft's Xbox Team recently announced on the Xbox blog that the original "Assassin's Creed" has now been added to the list of games for Xbox One backwards compatibility. This means that owners of the Xbox 360 game can now download and play the game on their Xbox One.

Players who purchased the game digitally via Xbox Live Arcade or Xbox Live Games on Demand will now find the icon available on their Xbox One dashboard, in the Games and Apps window. Simply download the game to the Xbox One's hard drive and the game can be played.

For those with a physical copy, they must insert the disc into the Xbox One and then download the necessary digital data to play the game. The game must be played with the disc in the tray.

"Assassin's Creed" was confirmed to join the roster of backwards-compatible games alongside "Dark Void" and "Grid 2." This comes a week after the inclusion of the Xbox Live version of "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night," "Pac-Man" and "Alan Wake."

With the inclusion of "Assassin's Creed," the list of games for backwards compatibility now has 145 games, including the more popular "Assassin's Creed II."

"Assassin's Creed" follows the tale of Desmond Miles, who utilizes a machine known as the Animus in order to access the genetic memories of his ancestors. The first game involves Desmond accessing the memories of Altair Ibn-La'Ahad, a member of the Assassins during the Third Crusade.

Desmond's story will continue in "Assassin's Creed II," where he accesses the memories of his ancestor from the Italian Renaissance period, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Desmond's story ends in the third game where he enters the memories of Connor, active during the Revolutionary War.

The franchise is also being adapted for film, with actor Michael Fassbender portraying the main character Callum Lynch and Lynch's ancestor known as Aguilar. "Assassin's Creed" will open in theaters this Dec. 21.
