As Google prepares to launch Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the company has released the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for some of Samsung's current flagship devices. According to a report from Neurogadget, T-Mobile subscribers have already begun receiving the update, while those under Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and US Cellular will receive the over-the-air update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 soon.
The update will also be available for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 owners. The Note 4 came with Android 4.0 KitKat packaged with it and only select carriers allowed their subscribers to update to Android Lollipop. Starting this October, the update will roll out for those who were not given access to Android 5.1.1.
According to Tech Times, the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 will also get the update. The report states that the update is already rolling out and should be available at the moment. This is for AT&T users as Verizon has already begun making it available for their subscribers.
The report states that the update is as large as 867 MB and that it would be better to download the update through a Wi-Fi connection instead of using paid data packages, which could be expensive and also not stable enough for a download this large.
As reported by BGR, the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is due this October and will be launched alongside Google's flagship Nexus devices, namely the long-rumored the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5 2015. Because of this release, other phones and tablets such as the aforementioned Samsung Galaxy S5 will now gain Android 5.1.1 to catch up.
The report also states that only 21 percent of Android devices at this point have Android 5.1.1 Lollipop running on them, which means a majority are still running on either KitKat or even older versions of Google's mobile OS. This is likely to change now that Lollipop is being made available for a wider selection of devices and the upcoming release of Android 6.0.
