'Amityville: The Awakening' spoilers: crucial plot points in new trailer

Amityville: The Awakening banner Blumhouse Productions

Blumhouse Productions, the same production studio responsible for hit horror films such as "The Purge," "Insidious" and "Paranormal Activity," has released the latest trailer for "Amityville: The Awakening." Starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bella Thorne, the film's trailer reveals it will be a stand-alone sequel set in the modern day.

The trailer reveals a single mom Joan, played by Leigh, who moves into the infamous Amityville horror house. With her are her three children. Bella Thorne plays rebel teenager Belle while "Gotham" star Cameron Monaghan plays the bed-ridden son James. The youngest is Juliet, played by McKenna Grace.

According to a report from Cinema Blend, the trailer appears to focus more on Thorne than it does on Leigh's character, indicating that the film will have a PG-13 rating instead of the traditional R-rating that many horror films have, given that horror films tend to feature lots of blood, cursing, sex and gore.

Scenes from the trailer also reveal that this is the exact same house that has garnered a bad reputation from the events of past films, which immediately causes paranormal problems to occur surrounding the new residents. In particular, there are scenes depicting Monaghan's James slowly losing strength despite being on constant life support.

The final frame of the trailer also reveals James sitting on a table, apparently cured of his illness. However, when the character looks up towards the camera, he sports his iconic evil grin that fans have grown accustomed to in "Gotham," indicating that the character may have already been possessed by the evil spirits of the house.

Unfortunately, many fans point out that the trailer does reveal too many plot points in the trailer, leaving very little left for audiences to discover when the movie does hit theaters later this year. Cinema Blend also points out that many of the scares seen in the trailer are re-hashes of those used in older "Amityville" films.

"Amityville: The Awakening" opens in theaters this April 1.
