'X-Men'-'Fantastic Four' crossover movie in the works for 2018?

X-Men and Fantastic Four Marvel Comics

Just about every studio is trying to create its own shared cinematic universe, following the success Disney and Marvel have had in recent years. According to a report from Latino-Review, it appears Fox is planning to do the same by doing a Fantastic Four and X-Men crossover film.

According to the report, 20th Century Fox has an untitled "X-Men" film scheduled for release in summer 2018. It is speculated that this untitled film may be a crossover project between the two franchises.

The upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" is scheduled for a May 27, 2016 release while the "Fantastic Four" reboot film, directed by Josh Trank, will open in theaters on Aug. 7 of this year. This will be followed by a "Fantastic Four 2" in 2017.

Fans have speculated that the two film franchises may one day cross over, but in a report from Cinema Blend, screenwriter Simon Kinberg explained that they take place in different universes. However, the report explains that this detail won't be much of a hindrance.

Cinema Blend points out that one of the major plot points of the "Fantastic Four" is the concept of traveling through different dimensions. It would not be too far-fetched of an idea for the Fantastic Four to create a portal and enter the dimension of the X-Men.

Likewise, the "X-Men" films have also dabbled in time travel which has caused major changes to the film series' line of events. Then there are characters such as Blink and Nightcrawler who regularly use inter-dimensional gates to teleport.

Cinema Blend's report says that the biggest hurdles to this crossover will be the success or failure of "Fantastic Four" and "X-Men: Apocalypse." If both projects fail to please the critics and do not succeed in the box office, then the 2018 crossover might not push through.
